The brief
Two travelers from Madrid wanted to understand how Shanghai’s lane houses, adaptive reuse and contemporary design belonged to the same city. They preferred close observation and conversation over a list of famous buildings, and planned to continue the design thread in Hangzhou.
The weather decision
A summer storm moved into the forecast before the afternoon walk. Mei and the Concierge team prepared a covered lane-house sequence, checked an indoor design archive and moved the riverside portion to a later blue-hour window. The updated time, route and bilingual meeting point were published together as the current version.
Mei’s contribution
Mei kept the same design question active across every replacement stop: what does a city preserve, adapt or let change? She used materials, thresholds and daily street life to connect the indoor and outdoor sequences, so the revised afternoon did not feel like an unrelated rain plan.
Result
The indoor alternative began on time, and the rain eased enough for the later riverside walk. This was the outcome for one set of conditions; weather, venue access and guide availability are confirmed independently for every future journey.
